Maiden of Durwood's P-51
Flying Field Shade Work EventConstruction began 4/20/08 on the shade project. Twelve club members braved the windy weather to lend a hand on the first phase of construction. Holes were dug and pipe was cemented into the holes as foundation for the upright supports. Durwood has put together a slide show work event. Check it out here... Zagi Day at Mormon Lake, May 18Join us for a day of slope soaring. We will meet out at the Mormon Lake Overlook on May 18. More info at our Flying Sites page. Dawson will have a Combat wing trainer (buddie box) available for those want to try slope soaring. We will set up a limbo and hope to have some combat too. Wind is usally blowing by 10:00 am. and is strongest around 2:00 pm. Bring a lunch and make a day of it. Spring Slope EventsSlope Day at Sheba Crater, April 13The wind took a break for our Slope Day at Sheba Crater (it had been windy all week). A hardy group of flyers met out at Sheba Crater Sunday morning. We tried to fly from the SE lower bench, but eventually all drove to the top of Sheba in search of more wind. Damien was not excited about driving up, his last trip up there was expensive, but he and Nik made it up to problem (as did everyone else). There was a very light breeze from the East-Southeast that would build up a bit OR die off completely as moderate thermals passed by. We did a lot of tossing and walking... a little flying. Dawson set up a bungie launch. We added hooks to our gliders and then got in a little more flying. Every now and then someone would catch a boomer! Roger had some the best flights with his 2M Fling and Saggita. Bill had some fun with his "jet" glider and electron assisted combat wing. Paul maidened a cute little rudder/aileron glider that flew very well in the light lift. Tom Mostenbocker showed off his skills with a "beater" Zagi, his son Drew seems to have inherited similar talents and enthusiasm. Meridith got in some more training... she is becoming a good little flyier. She was also top plane recovery "Sherpa." So... for NO WIND day, we had some fun. Thanks to everyone for coming out. Durwood has put together a slide show here. See you next month out at Mormon Lake Overlook. Flagstaff Flyers 2007 Annual DinnerIn January the club held the annual end of the year get together. If you happened to miss the party, you missed a good one. For those who missed out here are the details. Dawson and Durwood both gave a presentation. Dawson had some very interesting video taken from his helmet cam of various slope soaring adventures. Dawson also had a slide presentation of club photo's taken in 2007. Durwood gave a slide show on UAV's being used in the military. Read more in our current Newsletter. Shade...During 2007 a group of club members approached the Forest Service to obtain a permit to construct a shade structure at our flying site. They succeeded and deserve a vote of appreciation for their successes. What is needed now is agreement amongst the members to proceed, and that is the purpose of this letter. Discussion and a vote will be taken at our April 2, 2008 meeting. Your attendance is very important. Please call Bill Young if you have any questions.
